Students from Moreno Valley Unified School District participating in the United Way’s Girls Excelling in Mathematics with Success (GEMS) program spent an exciting day at the California Science Center with about 50 girls from surrounding school districts last week.

The group of 11 MVUSD 8th-grade girls was part of the summer GEMS Academy and started the program as 7th graders last year. The girls were able to see the Endeavour Space Shuttle up close, experience a hurricane simulator and read from a TelePrompTer at the museum. The group had the chance to talk with employees about the shuttle and also hold tiles used as part of the exterior of the Endeavour.

The girls also watched “Dream Big,” a film about how inventions came to be. The film also inspired them to plan their future to make a difference in the world.

GEMS is a United Way program that focuses on inspiring a love of math and science to 7th-grade girls in the Inland Empire.
