MORENO VALLEY>> If you’re a parent in the Moreno Valley Unified School District, your phone will ring precisely at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13. Superintendent Dr. Judy D. White will be calling all parent households to talk about new California Mathematics Standards, opportunities for parent involvement and how MVUSD is preparing students for college and career. The hour-long Telephone Town Hall Meeting is an efficient way of engaging parents in discussion by coming to them instead of asking them to attend a meeting after a long day. Using a talk-radio format, parents can ask questions live during the call, or just listen to the conversation for as long as they like. “We understand that people are busy, but they still want to be involved in their children’s education. So we try to make it as easy as possible for them to participate,” White said. “This gives them a chance to ask questions and to learn from the answers to questions that others ask.” A meeting at the district office might draw as few as 10 or 15 people, the Telephone Town Hall Meeting engages thousands of parents. Questions may be asked in English or Spanish. During the most recent Telephone Town Hall Meeting in June, several thousand parents stayed on the call for all or part of the hour-long discussion and White was able to answer more than 20 questions. Moreno Valley Unified School District is the third-largest school district in Riverside County, the 23rd largest in California, educating approximately 34,000 students in grades TK-12 at 40 schools.
