MORENO VALLEY>> State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson dropped by the Valley View High School's table at the annual California STEM Symposium in Anaheim, California. On October 9-11, the 2016 California STEM Symposium returned to the Anaheim Convention Center and became the largest annual gathering of STEM educators and STEM advocates in California. The symposium drew thousands of STEM educators from all over the Golden State to be inspired by their colleagues and learn about the latest in STEM education. Tim McGillivray, Public Information Officer for Moreno Valley Unified School District, Torlakson is a friend of MVUSD and always manages to stop by and visit with their symposium attendees, including both teachers and students. McGillivray said Palm Middle School students reportedly wowed the audience at one of the breakout sessions with their presentation demonstrating coding and robotics. VVHS students and staff talked to symposium visitors about the school’s computer-science pathway, now in development. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics and encompasses the processes of critical thinking, analysis and collaboration in which students integrate the processes and concepts in real world contexts of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, fostering the development of STEM skills and competencies for college, career and life.
