Leaders from every Moreno Valley Unified school got a lively kick-off to the year at the 2018 Joint Leadership Summit. The conference, which occurred yesterday and today, brought district leaders together, including representatives from Moreno Valley Educators Association (MVEA), California School Employees Association (CSEA), and the Association of Moreno Valley Management Personnel (AMVMP). Joining them were directors, coordinators, teachers, and principals for inspirational messages and important breakout sessions on a wide range of topics.

The MVUSD theme for this school year is Our Greatest Year. The theme draws on the inspirational, uplifting and inclusive music from the movie The Greatest Showman. A combined choir from all four comprehensive high schools performed the five songs from the movie throughout the weekend along with performances from the Vista del Lago High School dance team.

The conference’s goal is to focus on building support for individual students to provide the best education to every child in the district. The two-day summit featured two keynote addresses. The first keynote was from Tyrone Howard, a motivational speaker and author of “Why Race and Culture Matters in Schools.” The second keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Robyn Jackson, the author of “Never Underestimate Your Teachers.”

“Our leadership summit is an important start to our year,” said Board Member Jesús Holguín, “We offered speakers and sessions to inspire and teach new ideas to our district’s leaders. Our hope is that they will take these ideas back to their schools to continue our momentum of strong student achievement.”

School board members Susan Smith, Jesús Holguín, Cleveland Johnson and Gary Baugh also offered encouraging words to start a new year, while Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Martinrex Kedziora addressed all staff to review goals and expectations. Members of the joint leadership team gave a presentation on improving the effectiveness of teamwork between all groups of employees.

“This year’s theme is about supporting our staff and students to greatness,” said Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, “I hope our summit ushers our team and children toward discovering their purpose in life.”
