This week, the Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) and participating business partners were proud to celebrate the over 200 student interns who completed the 2018 Summer A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. Program!
The A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. Program, which stands for “Accelerating Success Through Employment, Responsibility, Inspiration, Skills and Knowledge,” placed qualified high school and graduated students in five-week summer internships at MVUSD, City of Moreno Valley, and several other agencies and private-sector businesses. Throughout these five weeks, interns gained a modest stipend, a tremendous amount of work experience, and were able to make contacts with professionals in which they can always refer to for future mentorship and networking. A few interns even landed a job with their A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. employer, such as Balraj Basra, who interned at CVS Pharmacy.
“This program helped me a lot,” said Basra. “I got a job now, and it’s helped me gain work experience that will help me apply for more prominent jobs in the future. I’m really happy I decided to join the program this year.”
“With the A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. Program, you never know who’s going to benefit more from it - the interns or us, the mentors,” said Superintendent Dr. Kedziora. “While we are teaching them lessons about work ethics and role responsibilities, we have found that our interns also teach us valuable lessons along the way.”
We wrapped up the program with an "End of Program Celebration" in the Valley View High School Theater, where all interns were recognized for their hard work throughout the program. See the list of names and event program at the A.S.T.E.R.I.S.K. website.
