Saturday, Dec. 12 was a snow day in Moreno Valley as community members of all ages gathered at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center to bask in the chilly atmosphere. The snow pits opened at about 10 a.m. and ran until about 4 p.m. Miss Teen Sunnymead Ariana Morales and Miss Moreno Valley Melanie Villarreal welcomed community members and gave children the wristbands needed to access the snow. There were two separate snow pits, one for kids over the age of six and another for 'tots', children five years and younger. Parents were welcome to join in with their children, as well. Moreno Valley resident and grandmother, Conny brought her granddaughter to play in the snow and even joined in the pit with her. "We've been getting into the Christmas spirit the whole month," Conny said as her and her granddaughter began to work on constructing a snow man. "Now with the snow... it's officially Christmas. It's the cherry on top," she said chuckling. Other groups of children and even families reserved their own little spot in the snow to start building their snowman. Even though the rules stated to not throw any snowballs at other people, some of the kids snuck in a couple snowball fights with their friends. Traditional festive snacks like coffee, hot cocoa, lemonade, fruit smoothies, funnel cakes, nachos and baked goods were available to attendees.
