The firefighters of CAL FIRE Local 2881 are honored that SCR 22, written by Senator Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga), has been adopted by the Legislature. Morrell’s efforts to remember a fallen firefighter were an important part of his legislative agenda. SCR 22 designates the five-mile portion of Interstate 10 from the 22nd Street undercrossing to the Malki Road undercrossing in Banning, California as Christopher Lee Douglas Memorial Highway. On July 5, 2013, the state suffered a tragic loss when CAL FIRE Firefighter Christopher Lee Douglas was tragically killed in the line of duty while responding to a traffic accident in Riverside County. He was leaving the scene of a medical emergency when his engine was dispatched to a traffic accident. While preparing to respond to the call, Firefighter Douglas was struck by a pickup truck. He was rushed to the hospital; however, he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. Firefighter Douglas is survived by his wife, Amy, and their two children, Samuel and Bridget, as well as his mother, sister and brother. Firefighter Douglas exemplified the professionalism, work ethic, and dedication for which CAL FIRE firefighters are known. He touched the lives of many and is truly missed by all who knew him. He will never be forgotten. “Topher was a great firefighter, an extraordinary person, an incredibly reliable and impressive colleague, a wonderful friend and a beloved family member,” said Curtis Brown, CAL FIRE Division Chief in Temecula. “Our community was made better by his presence and we are enriched by his memory.”
