Defending the Caveman, a Broadway comedy, was playing at the Fox Theater in Riverside on Oct. 18. Defending the Caveman was a comedic one-man show about the differences between males and female. Cody Lyman played the caveman for the night, with many years of theater background starting at his alma mater, Colorado State University some years back. He portrayed all the ways couples interact, whether it be shopping, cleaning, or even just staying at home watching TV. Audiences were hysterical throughout the show due to his constant reminder that all men and woman resemble cavemen and cavewoman and how we were all “hunters and gatherers” in our own modern world today. Defending the Caveman was written by Rob Becker over a 3-year period, during which he informally studied anthropology, prehistory, psychology, sociology and mythology. Since then, the show has become a hysterical theater display of the relationships between man and woman. Elise Fischer, an audience member, commented, “I saw this show about 30 years ago and it was pretty funny, so I wanted to bring my daughter along to see it.” Her and her daughter Brianna Macinka came down from Laguna Hills to watch the show. Margaret Ortiz, a life-long fan of live theater, brought her niece on Saturday to enjoy the show as well. “I actually don’t know much about the show, but I’m such a big fan of live theater, we decided it would be fun.” Megan Perez, a UCR student, and her aunt, Margaret have semi-annual get-togethers during the year to catch up since Megan is originally from Northern California. Margaret doesn’t get the chance to see her as much so they thought a night out at the Fox Theater would be fun to spend together. Kanako Imamura, an audience member, described the show as being, “…another take on the whole ‘Men are from Mars, Woman are from Venus’ outlook.” Defending the Caveman has been seen in 45 countries and translated into 18 different languages. It also has the record for being the longest running solo play in Broadway, having its opening show in San Francisco in 1991. Our Caveman for the night, Cody Lyman has also been a part of the show for quite a while as well, over a decade. Now, Defending the Caveman tours all around America and around the globe.
