More than 200 California schools applied for a grant by the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Council for $100,000 in brand new fitness equipment, but just three were chosen - among them, Sunnymead Middle School, which recently cut the ribbon on its new fitness center. All equipment is provided through corporate donations.
On hand to cut the ribbon was motivational fitness expert Jake Steinfeld, chair of the NFGFC, and founder and CEO of Body by Jake Global. (You might remember his television fitness show, "Body by Jake.")
Steinfeld, whose motto is, "Don't quit!", told students he has "declared war on childhood obesity." "I’ve always said that academics and fitness go hand in hand," he told a packed assembly at the school, "and by giving schools the tools, we can build strong bodies and minds while boosting confidence, self-esteem and focus in the classroom." Here he is in the new fitness center encouraging a student to keep at it: "Don't quit!"
