Dear Moreno Valley Residents, As Mayor of Moreno Valley, and as a professional educator, one of my highest priorities is helping prepare young people to take the reins of leadership at school, eventually in their careers, and in their community. That’s the thinking behind the City’s Emerging Leaders Council (ELC), begun in 2014, and what is guiding the City Council and me to expand both the ELC membership and its responsibilities. The new ELC will be comprised of nine voting members and two alternates appointed to two-year terms, and up to 30 non-voting members at-large. All middle-school members must start as members at-large to prepare them to move into voting positions. The ELC’s primary role is to advise City leaders about youth-related issues, but there’s now so much more to experience. With the opening later this year of MoVal’s new Teen SPOT (Support, Programs, Opportunities and Technology), a teen-focused after-school space at the City's Conference & Recreation Center, ELC members will also serve as Teen SPOT ambassadors, help develop youth programming there, coordinate its annual open house, mentor younger teens at Teen SPOT and serve as volunteers for other City events.
