Dear Moreno Valley Residents: The City of Moreno Valley is embarking on an exciting new partnership with our educational partners to help at-risk students successfully enter the workforce. The Mayor’s Apprenticeship Program Promoting Employment Development – or M.A.P.P.E.D – is designed to benefit dozens of students who have mild to moderate special needs, are English learners, or come from families who are at a low economic status. We as a City are helping to mold civically and socially engaged young people who have the skills and the confidence to join the ranks of the employed. According to recent enrollment statistics, 12.75% of Moreno Valley Unified students were in special education, 21.51% were English learners, and 81.7% met the low income requirements to qualify for free/reduced priced meals. As an educator, I know the difference a program like this can have. That’s why I directed staff to design M.A.P.P.E.D to provide a path to employment for our most at-risk students. Partnering with Moreno Valley Unified School District, the City will place pre-qualified students in internships across various City Departments. The 12-week program will run twice a year – fall and spring – and serve up to 40 students each year. Students will receive up to $500 based on the number of internship program hours they complete. M.A.P.P.E.D will enhance the career readiness of our at-risk students, help meet local workforce needs, and develop positive, contributing members of society. The concept is a simple one. But the impact will last a lifetime. I can’t wait to see what these students will accomplish!
