Michelle Gomez, Canyon Springs High School Counselor, has been named Top Counselor of the Year by The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Ms. Gomez is also the advisor to the school’s Anti-Bullying Club, also known as ABC, which was recognized as the HERO Peer Club of the Year by the Riverside Medical Clinic Charitable Foundation earlier this year.
“We are so proud of this well-deserved recognition for Michelle,” said Moreno Valley Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora. “Michelle has made a huge impact on not just her school community, but our entire district through her work with the Anti-Bullying Club.”
The Educators of the Year Award is presented annually to exemplary educators who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to preparing students for success in college and in life. These awardees model best practices in teaching or administration inside and outside of the classroom, are peer role models, and demonstrate outstanding leadership and excellence in education.
“I am extremely honored to have received the Counselor of the Year award from the National Society of High School Scholars,” said Michelle Gomez. “I am earnestly grateful for the recognition I have received for my work because I strive to be a positive influence in the lives of students, staff, and the community. Winning this award would not have been possible without the inspiration I have received from my students, for whom I have the deepest respect. I sincerely thank each of my colleagues, my principals, district personnel and the school board for helping me reach a stage where I can proudly hold up this award as a mark of my achievement.”
NSHSS selects one $5,000 Educator of the Year award winner in each of the five categories: Top Principal, Top Teacher, Top Coach, Top Band/Music Director, and Top College Counselor. Three finalists are awarded $1,000 within each category.
“Michelle Gomez and the work that she has accomplished with students is inspiring to all,” said Board President Dr. Marsha Locke. “She always goes above and beyond for her students. There are many schools that reach out to her to learn what she has done with the Anti-Bullying Club due to its ongoing success and impact on students’ lives. We are very proud of her for being named the Top Counselor of the Year from the National Society of High School Scholars.”
Since 2002, the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) has been supporting young academics on their journey to college and beyond as they prepare to become the leaders of tomorrow. Co-founded by the great-nephew of Alfred Nobel, NSHSS is inspired by the mission of the Nobel Prize to support academic achievement and world betterment.
