Colton and Surrounding Cities Celebrate the Retirement of a Loyal Officer in a heartfelt and emotional tribute, community members from Colton and neighboring cities gathered alongside local law enforcement this past week to celebrate the retirement of one of San Bernardino Police Department’s most beloved officers — K-9 Officer Rex.

After years of loyal service, Officer Rex received his official “last call” in a special ceremony that honored his dedication, courage, and impact on the force. The event, hosted by the San Bernardino Police Department, brought out officers, other departments , families, civic leaders, and K-9 supporters from all over the Inland Empire to say thank you and farewell to a four-legged hero.

The ceremony included a demonstration led by Officer McCallon, Rex’s trusted handler, who showed the crowd just how skilled and disciplined Rex has been on the job. Corporal Eric Wickman  played an important role as he suited up for the last demonstration with Rex .From release and apprehension to public safety demonstrations, Rex’s performance left no doubt as to why he’s been such a valuable member of the department.

Officer Anthony Vega also took a moment to speak on Rex’s career, recognizing the strength of the bond between handler and K-9 and the countless hours of training, service, and protection Rex has provided the community.

“Rex has been more than just a working dog — he’s been a partner, a protector, and a symbol of trust,” Vega shared. “He’s earned every bit of this retirement, and we’ll forever be grateful for the work he’s done.”

It was a bittersweet moment for many — excitement for Rex’s well-earned rest, but sadness in seeing such a dedicated officer leave the line of duty. As Rex took his final walk off-duty, the crowd erupted in applause, some holding back tears, others smiling as he trotted off to begin the next chapter of his life: one filled with rest, play, and unconditional love from his forever home.

From all of us in Colton, Grand Terrace, and across San Bernardino County: Congratulations, Officer Rex. Thank you for your service, and enjoy your retirement. You’ve earned it.

“Not all heroes wear capes — some wear a collar and badge.” ????
