Mayor's Message: Fireworks are Illegal

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

As we celebrate the holidays and the end of this year, I want to remind folks that all fireworks are illegal in Moreno Valley.  And MoVal Police have made fireworks enforcement their top non-emergency priority in the weeks leading up to New Year’s Eve.

The near-constant barrage of fireworks can ruin the season for others.  It can make life unbearable for military veterans suffering post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  It can scare dogs and cats and make them run away.  And then there’s the risk of injury.  In 2019, 10,000 Americans were treated for fireworks-related injuries, and more than a third of them were children.  All the fun goes out of fireworks pretty quickly when someone gets hurt.

The City’s Fireworks Task Force, comprised of MVPD, MoVal Fire, and Code & Neighborhood Services, is patrolling the ground and the air, on the lookout for fireworks violators.  Penalties could include criminal charges and a fine of up to $3,500.

To report illegal fireworks quickly, easily and anonymously, go online to www.moval.org/fireworks.  Or you can contact MVPD dispatch by calling 951-247-8700 (choose option #5).   Please be ready to provide an address or nearest cross street so police can respond.

2020 has been enough of a challenging time for all of us.  Let’s happily bid it farewell without the potentially dangerous consequences of illegal fireworks.
