Mayor's Message: Returning to the Fundamentals

By Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

When a sports team finds itself on a losing streak, it usually can be traced back to players simply failing to do the things that made them winners in the first place. Once they come together as a team and agree on the problem, they inevitably renew their commitment to “the fundamentals” and can usually pull out of their slump and start winning again.

When it comes to coronavirus, many Californians took their eyes off the ball in June as some businesses and activities were reopened, setting aside physical distancing and letting down their guard – and their masks. The resulting losing streak we’re on includes increasing infection, hospitalization and death rates.

The good news is that we agree on the problem, and we know that recommitting to the fundamentals of mask-wearing, physical distancing and hand-washing can pull us out of this slump.

As Mayor, I also urge residents to recommit to the stay-at-home order and limit travel away from home to essential trips, such as to the grocery store or for medical care.

Slowing the spread of coronavirus again is well within our reach, and it’s also the key to further reopening of the economy. Let’s recommit to the fundamentals and get back to our winning ways.
