Mayor's Message Coronavirus and Children

By Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

Take all the stress and fear that almost every adult is feeling right now about coronavirus and imagine you’re a child.  Because children are feeling it, too, and they are much less well-equipped to handle it alone.

Psychologists say that what children need is not for adults to dismiss the situation or pretend it doesn’t exist.   Instead, they need to see that the adults in their lives are able to cope with this very real challenge calmly and with common sense, common courtesy and empathy for others.  And, very importantly, they need to have a safe space to be able to honestly discuss their own fears and get answers to their questions from adults who love them.  To help you provide answers, we’ve created a comprehensive and continuously updated coronavirus resource guide online at www.moval.org/coronavirusresources.

As always, children are watching to see how we respond to this difficult situation.  Let’s be the kind of adults we want our children to grow up to be.

We will get through this together.
