Mayor’s Weekly Message: California State Guard

By Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez
Mayor of Moreno Valley
02/23/2021 at 10:52 AM

Dear Moreno Valley Residents,

I’m a big believer in public service and volunteerism.  That’s why I chose a career as a public educator, and why I volunteered to serve on the City Council and ran for election to serve as Mayor of Moreno Valley.  Recently, I learned of another way I could serve our state and nation:  as a member of the California State Guard, a component of Cal Guard, the California Military Department.

CSG is a state military operational force, subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which can be mobilized to provide support services during time of emergency and natural disaster.

Recently, I was sworn in to the CSG by Colonel (CA) Conrad Hernandez. In attendance were my family and friends, including Brigadier General Melissa Coburn, the commanding officer at March Air Reserve Base (MARB).  I will serve as a 1st Lieutenant in the CSG in support of the Air National Guard 163rd Attack Wing Air Command Public Affairs office.  CSG service includes monthly drills on base at MARB and the possibility of emergency call-up at any time.

Almost all of us can find a way to give back to our community.  And it doesn’t have to be world-changing.  It could be as simple as checking in on an elderly neighbor and offering your help, or volunteering at a local food bank.  Each of us has something to offer.  Need help getting started?  Start by checking some City volunteer opportunities at http://www.moval.org/parks-comm-svc/Things-volunteer.html or visiting the California State Guard website at https://calguard.ca.gov/csg.
