MORENO VALLEY>> Joining the outgoing Dr. Judy D. White, who was chosen as the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region XIX Superintendent of the Year, and new superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, named ACSA Region XIX Curriculum & Instruction Administrator, is Sunnymead Middle School’s Jennifer Castillo, honored as Region XIX Middle Grades Principal of the Year, and Elsa Magaña, recognized as Adult Education Administrator of the Year. “We’re so pleased to see Principal Castillo recognized on a regional level,” Kedziora said. “Just last spring, Sunnymead was chosen as a National School to Watch, meaning it’s a model for other middle schools across the nation, and that kind of achievement starts with sound leadership – which, in Jennifer’s case, includes an endless supply of enthusiasm. Elsa Magaña’s recognition is also very well deserved, as our Adult School is, quite literally in many cases, transforming the lives of students and their families.” Castillo has served as Sunnymead’s principal since 2012. Previously, she served as assistant principal at Valley View High School and at several other high schools in other school districts. She began her administrative career as Associated Student Body Director at MVUSD’s Vista Heights Middle School, a school that she attended. Castillo is also an alumna of Canyon Springs High School. Magaña has served as Adult School assistant principal since 2015. She began her service in 2008 as a teacher of Spanish and AVID at Moreno Valley High School. As Region XIX’s Middle Grades Principal of the Year and Adult Education Administrator of the Year, Castillo and Magaña will compete for statewide designations later this year.
