MORENO VALLEY >> On April 5, 2016, Elks Lodge #2697 honored six Lodge Most Valuable Student Scholarship Winners with a pasta dinner, trimmings, and dessert. The dinner was followed by a ceremony honoring Marcus A. Romero and Andrea D. Echevarria (unable to attend) from Canyon Springs High School, Nicholas Araujo, and Christine Castanon from Vista del Lago High School, Nathan Sanchez from Nuview Bridge Early College High School and Chinaechelum Vincent from John W. North High School. Chinaechelum’s mother stood in for her since her daughter was in Pennsylvania checking on a university she was considering to attend in the fall. Moreno Valley Elks Lodge awarded the students certificates, $500 and a memento to remember the evening. Students discussed the essay from their applications and told the audience their college plans for the 2016-17 school year. All students planned to attend well-known universities with a variety of amazing subject majors and minors. Several students were already certain they would attend UCLA. Thirty-six Elk members, students, and guests were in attendance. All in attendance were reminded that these special students went through a rigorous application process and needed an A+ in Test Scores, Academic Achievement, Employment, Community Service, Honors and Awards, Leadership and Extracurricular Activities in order to be a Lodge Scholarship Winner. Marcus A. Romero, Andrea D. Echevarria (unable to attend), and Nicholas Araujo were honored with an extra $800 when their applications were selected to move up to State level. Moreno Valley Elks Lodge was proud to honor these fine scholars. The audience was reminded that through the Most Valuable Student (MVS) scholarship program, since 1931, the Elks National Foundation has helped thousands of students who need financial assistance to fulfill their dreams of attending college. MVS scholars are outstanding students who are at or near the top of their class, active in their schools and communities and recognized as leaders by their peers.
