District and community leaders joined the students of Serrano Elementary School to celebrate the opening of the school’s new two-story classroom building on Wednesday.

The new building has been utilized by fourth and fifth graders since the beginning of the school year, but Thursday was the day to officially mark its opening. The nearly 12,000 square foot building has eight classrooms that replaced portable units. The new building also houses a teacher workroom and restroom facilities. The $7 million building was funded through the state’s Emergency Repair Program (ERP) and Community Facilities District funds.

“The first day I saw the building, I thought, this is going to be a great school year,” said student Elizabeth Garcia at the ceremony.

“Adding a new building at Serrano Elementary School is an investment in our future. We want all students to attend class in a space that provides a 21st-century learning experience,” said Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora.

Principal Maria Arreola selected modern, collaborative-encouraging furniture in the school colors of red and white to finish the rooms with style. The building was also designed with interactive projectors and audio systems in each classroom.
