The volunteers who worked to restore Moreno Valley's "M" landmark on the side of Box Springs Mountain in late 2013, were recognized for their efforts by the Moreno Valley City Council last week. Volunteers led by Parks and Recreation Commissioner James C. Baker II, who organized the project, included Tracy Smith, Bill Alverez, George Brummer, Juanita Barnes, Virgil Chancy, Diane Thompson, Joe Jackson, Trudy Baker, Gilbert Brooks, Andrew Hampen, Marcus Millen, Patrick Munson, Carlos Pinedo, Reymundo Pinedo, Chip Sanchez, Gabriel Sandoval, Gabriel Vigel, John Wetzel, Nancy Wetzel, Joshua Ziemer, Jeff Burke, Cindy Burke and Bonnie Flickinger. Volunteers cleared the landmark of debris and gave the M a new coat of white paint to make it even more visible from the side of the mountain and to welcome visitors into the city. For the recent holidays, volunteers were also able to light the landmark up with holiday lights. Baker said he plans on holding a second presentation to honor the volunteers during the regular parks and recreation commission meeting on March 13.
