New MVUSD Strategic Plan Sets Forth Clear Priorities

You could call the new Moreno Valley Unified Strategic Plan, “No child or community member left behind,” based on its top priorities. The first emphasizes that education is for all students, not just some, and that ensuring it is the responsibility of the entire community, not just teachers and parents: “Parents, staff, and community members support all students with attaining academic goals and career aspirations.” “That’s our top priority as a school district, and it should be a top priority of our entire community,” explained MVUSD School Board Vice President Dr. Denise Fleming. “It’s simple, really: All of us have an interest in making sure all students get a good education and can move forward with confidence to higher education or career. And all means all. Everyone in the community has a role to play and each student is equally important.” Fleming pointed out that the Strategic Plan’s second stated priority also involves the entire community on behalf of all students: “Provide a clean, safe and inviting learning environment for all students.” “That includes both the way students are respected and cared for at school,” she noted, “and also the way we, as a community, make sure our school facilities are maintained day to day, and repaired and modernized when needed.” In June, the School Board decided to place a new construction bond measure – Measure M – before voters this November, the first MVUSD bond since 2004, and only the second in the past 25 years. The community-inclusive strategic planning team includes students, parents, teachers, classified district staff, representatives of the local business community, faith communities, colleges, and other community stakeholders, along with several School Board members and MVUSD administrators. The team began meeting monthly beginning in Oct. 2013, and continues to work to publicize the plan within the school district and to the larger community.
