The City of Moreno Valley is actively seeking Moreno Valley college students ages 18 - 25 to submit applications to participate on the new Emerging Leaders Council. Established by the City Council on April 8th, the purpose of the Emerging Leaders Council is to: • Identify college students with the desire and potential to become community leaders • Educate those students in local and regional government policies and activities • Focus their efforts on service in the Moreno Valley community. The Emerging Leaders Council was proposed by Council Member Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez. Regarding his vision for this newest City Council commission, Dr. Gutierrez stated, "As a college instructor I meet many young adults who have demonstrated strong leadership potential and a passion to serve their community. The Emerging Leaders Council will give college students an opportunity to participate in local government and contribute to the Moreno Valley community in a very positive way." The Emerging Leaders Council will consist of 7 members and two alternates. Some of the objectives include creating opportunities for public discussion of issues of importance to the community's youth and young adults and communicating those issues to the City Council. They will also make recommendations to the City Council regarding youth-related programs, services, and legislation. Meetings will be conducted monthly and will be open to the public. Appointments will be made by the City Council. Applications are due to the City Clerk's Office by May 16 and are available online at the City's website: www.moval.org.
