An important part of every AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is having guest speakers expose students to various careers. AVID is an academic program designed to support students in the academic middle who show promise for success in college. Mountain View Middle School's AVID program has had a number of interesting speakers visit to talk with students, but recently, they welcomed a long-distance guest, U.S. Air Force Sgt. Matthew Garrett, who is currently stationed at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan. During his hour-long Skype visit, students also heard the sound of planes and helicopters coming and going. The base was on high alert due to continuing attacks. It was an amazing opportunity for students.
