Make Halloween a Safe and Joyous Time to Remember

Halloween is notably one of the most thrilling times of the year. To make it the most memorable, make sure you and your little trick-o-treater follow these guidelines for safety: o Halloween parties are safer than trick-or-treating. o Daylight trick-or-treating is safer than going out after dark. o Stay within your neighborhood and visit only the people you know. o Avoid streets with poor lighting. o Visit only those houses where the lights are on. o Never walk the streets alone. Travel in a group, or best of all, make sure a parent is along whenever possible. Young children should always go trick-or-treating with an adult. o Carry a flashlight to illuminate sidewalks, steps and pathways. o Plan your entire route and make sure your family knows what it is. o Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house. o Never approach strangers in automobiles, especially at night. o Don’t play near lit jack-o-lanterns. o Keep an eye on pumpkins containing lit candles, as animals can easily knock them over and start a fire. o Never drive while wearing a mask. o Obey all traffic signals, both as a pedestrian and a driver. o Use common sense. Never dart from between parked cars. Don’t trick-or-treat in busy commercial areas or where there is heavy traffic. Most important! Before eating trick-or-treat items, an adult should check all wrapped AND unwrapped candy. If you find something suspicious, isolate the object and call your local police department for further guidance. If possible, it’s best that an adult inspect a treat as soon as it is received. Have a SAFE and joyous Halloween!
