Moreno Valley's "M" Landmark: Not Just A Symbol, A Tradition

MORENO VALLEY >> Moreno Valley's “M” landmark went through a major repair in 2013 and since then, it has been properly taken care of, thanks to the efforts of Parks Commissioner James C. Baker and numerous volunteers willing to keep up with its restoration. According to Keith Mullins of the Moreno Valley Historical Society, the “M” was first done in the 1960s by Moreno Valley High School students. The Landmark lays at about a 45-degree angle, at approximately 150 square feet, and 20 feet across. Since its foundation is on such a steep slope, and nearly 3,000 feet above sea level, Baker believes that it is important that the crew is familiar with the process. Otherwise, it could be somewhat dangerous. “It’s the little things,” he said “The dirt parts are like ice; so if you didn’t know that, you could easily slip.” “Each year, it gets better and better,” Baker added. Baker and his crew go up to clean the "M" once a year. Baker said that his crew is the same each year and some members are professional gardeners and thus, know all the ins and outs of the process. Since the upkeep, the “M” has evolved into much more than just a symbol for the Moreno Valley community; it’s now part of a tradition that incorporates all Moreno Valley residents. Every year, the “M” is lit up on December 3, in honor and celebration of the City’s anniversary. For the holidays, there is also a lighting ceremony as they decorate it in red and green lights to celebrate Christmas. The lighting began on Dec. 23 and stayed lit throughout the New Year, until Jan. 3. "This is Moreno Valley's way of saying to the world, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year," Baker said regarding the holiday lighting. "We are the city of Moreno Valley. We are still standing: strong, proud and solid". The “M” Landmark has served more than this tradition throughout its lifespan; it comes with heart-warming stories, shared Baker. Yolanda Martinez, a local woman who is suffering from cancer, and her son Isaiah Espinoza, who is effected by autism shared their inspiring story with Baker. As she was driving on the 215 freeway; her son looked up at the “M” and just had a huge smile on his face once he saw it. "She told me she was so happy to be alive to see her son smile and be happy," Baker said. “It did her heart good to see her son really excited when he saw the illuminated M.” “They will be my special guest next year at the lighting ceremony,” Baker added. “I’m thinking about having Isaiah start our 30 second countdown as the M is lit, ushering in the Holiday season.” The Moreno Valley Landmark stays freshly-painted and clean enough for all the Moreno Valley residents to see. Non-residents can also see the "M" as they drive by on the nearby 215 and 60 freeways.
