MORENO VALLEY>> Their votes may not count in official totals, but students who took part in the mock election Tues., Oct. 11 at Vista del Lago High School will most likely paint a pretty accurate picture of the real results with the ballots they cast. “Students are not as disconnected from politics as many people might think,” said teacher Tami Depasse. “They know that elections are about the future, and that the future is about them.” The VLHS event is part of the MyVote California Student Mock Election, intended to help young people discover the importance of elections and the power of their votes in our democracy. It gives students firsthand experience with the electoral process by allowing them a chance to make their voices heard on the candidates and issues important to them and their families. More than 1,300 schools and 787,000 students will participate statewide. At VLHS, students voted for president, U.S. senator and on several measures on the California ballot. Voting took place in the school library from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a lull between 9-10 a.m. Vista del Lago is located at 15150 Lasselle St., in Moreno Valley. Moreno Valley Unified School District is the third-largest school district in Riverside County and the 23rd largest in California, educating more than 34,000 students in grades TK-12 at 40 schools. Our graduation rate exceeds both the state and national averages.
