VVUSD Crossing Guard Program Aims to Make Student Safety a Priority

This school year Moreno Valley’s Val Verde Unified School District (VVUSD) announced the launch of its elementary school crossing guard program. Since Aug. 12, each elementary school within the district had one crossing guard assigned to assist children crossing the street immediately before and after school hours. In past years, the district contracted with the City of Moreno Valley to provide crossing guards to those elementary schools within the VVUSD which also fell within Moreno Valley City limits; this year, the district expanded these crossing guard services to every elementary school in its domain, taking over the crossing guard services and using internal personnel, according to a statement issued by the VVUSD. Superintendent Juan López highlighted the efforts the district is making in the way of ensuring each school child’s safety. “The district has made safety one of our top priorities and providing crossing guard services to all of elementary schools is one example of our commitment to safety,” he said, also crediting the Board of Education for making safety a priority. “The Board has given clear direction in regards to launching this program,” Lopez said. Each crossing guard has completed a two hour-long training course conducted by the Department of Security last month, and some crossing guards also have additional duties, working at various school sites as supervision aides, the release states.
