Moreno Valley Unified School District is observing Yellow Ribbon Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Week and some of our elementary schools approached the topic in a “friendly” manner.

La Jolla Elementary School staff encouraged students to wear yellow every day this week to celebrate friendship, hope, and happiness. The week started with “Make a Friend Monday” including a ball pit for students to sit in together. The students introduced themselves and asked each other questions while sitting in the fun setting. Tuesday was “Tell a Friend Tuesday.” Students were asked to tell a friend how much they care about them. By midweek, students were asked about characteristics of a good friend to observe “What Makes a Good Friend Wednesday.” “Thank a Friend Thursday” followed with an appreciation station for students to write small thank you notes to friends during recess. The week ended today with “Find a Minion Friday.” Students were asked to wear “Minion” attire and then could connect with a fellow “Minion” at recess.

At TownGate Elementary School, students were encouraged to practice their friendship skills, make new friends and reach out to peers that were looking sad or lonely. The school also held a Friendship Gram exchange and other themed activities in the classrooms. The school also had some new decor as students created their own emojis to display around campus.
