Where Does Milk Come From?

Go ahead, I dare you: Ask any student at La Jolla Elementary where milk comes from and you may be in for an ear full after two recent visits from the Dairy Council of California’s Mobile Dairy Classroom. In a very entertaining presentation, students learned just about everything there is to know about milk production, the dairy industry and about Coco, the Swiss Brown cow who stood there patiently while her amazing milk-producing body was described in minute detail. (Did you know that Holsteins, the black-and-white kind, produce more milk, but the Swiss Browns produce more cream in their milk? See? Now they have me throwing out cow facts!) But the highlight of the event was the chance to pet seven-week-old bull calf Snickerdoodle, who had to be awakened from what appeared to be quite the cozy little nap. Poor boy! But he also was very patient.
