MORENO VALLEY>> The Health Careers Academy at Canyon Springs High School has been chosen by the state Department of Education as a 2017 California Partnership Academies “Distinguished Academy,” ranking it among the best high school programs in California that mix core academics and career-technical education. The California Partnership Academies per California Education Code Section 54690-54697 represents a high school reform movement that is focused on smaller learning communities with a career theme. Academy components include rigorous academics and career technical education, with a career focus, a committed team of teachers and active business and post-secondary partnerships. There are 406 California Partnership Academies, and CSHS Health Careers Academy is one of just 14 chosen for recognition. "This is the 30th anniversary of our California Partnership Academies, which illustrate groundbreaking work in providing at-risk students a great chance to succeed in school and life," said Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, in a letter to those attending the Educating in Careers Conference. "I have toured many of the hands-on programs that inspire and energize students and cover a broad range of dynamic fields — from cybersecurity and pre-apprenticeship to forensic science and emergency medical response. The depth and breadth of these courses are extraordinary and reflect the variety of cutting-edge technology in the modern workplace. As a result of this innovative work, we have seen growing support for our academies program, which was funded again in the 2016–17 state budget."
