We Can't Forget School Bus Driver Day

The yellow school bus is an icon of American public education, and at any given time during the school day, there are approximately 100 of them traveling the streets of Moreno Valley, transporting children to and from Moreno Valley schools. It’s critically important work, so in recognition of its transportation staff, Moreno Valley Unified marked April 22 as School Bus Driver Day. Staff were treated to barbecued burgers and hotdogs for lunch. Superintendent Dr. Judy D. White presented several service awards. “For many students, the bus driver really represents school,” said MVUSD Transportation Manager Jason Songer. “They’re the ones who welcome children in the morning, and the last smiling faces who say goodbye in the afternoon. Bus drivers can help set a positive tone for the students’ whole day.” Moreno Valley Unified drivers transport approximately 3,000 students to and from school, logging about 4,500 miles each day and more than one-million miles each year. “Our drivers safely travel the equivalent of two round trips to the moon every year,” said Songer. “We’re very proud of their performance and those who support them and the service they provide to students."
