Telephone Town Hall Reaches Thousands of Parents

MORENO VALLEY>> At 6 p.m. on Oct. 13, about 15,000 phones in Moreno Valley rang at the same time. On the line was Superintendent Dr. Judy D. White, calling to take education-related questions from parents and to to talk about new California Mathematics Standards, opportunities for parent involvement and how MVUSD is preparing students for college and career. The Telephone Town Hall Meeting has become an effective way for White to engage parents by coming to them instead of always expecting parents to come to a meeting in the evening. Almost 6,000 parents stayed on the line and listened to the discussion in a talk-radio-style format for at least part of the hour. About 600 stayed for the entire hour of the “Fall Call.” White had time to answer about 20 callers’ questions. “We understand that people are busy, but they still want to be involved in their children’s education. So we try to make it as easy as possible for them to participate,” White said, in a previous City News Group article. “This gives them a chance to ask questions and to learn from the answers to questions that others ask.” The next Telephone Town Hall – the “Spring Ring” – will be held in May or June of 2017.
