4th Grade Students Become Authors

Students in John Hlava's fourth grade class at Butterfield Elementary School in Moreno Valley have become young authors. They have written their nine-chapter autobiographies about their short lives and past experiences, along with their future hopes and wishes. The 25- to 35-page books start out with chapters on their friends and family, their lives so far, and their favorite things. It covers the importance of education, high school and college plans, their career and grown up life. They conclude with rules for good living. Hlava said of his students, "I'm so proud of them for working so hard on this project. I hope they keep these positive visions for their future, and save these books to read again in 30 or 40 years." Hlava wrote his own autobiography four years ago with a humorist twist, and he feels everyone should tell their story. "Everyone has something important to say and highlights in their life worth sharing," he said. As the published author of the book "Mitigating Hate," he feels writing is very important for his students, and he requires them to do some writing every day.
