MORENO VALLEY>> The City of Moreno Valley is looking for men and women to represent the City in the first Mayor's Cup Basketball Challenge that will take place Oct. 15. The tournament will be hosted by the City of Moreno Valley at the Conference and Recreation Center, located at 14075 Frederick St. in Moreno Valley. The tournament will match teams from numerous cities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties as they compete to see who has the best team in the Inland Empire. "As Mayor of Moreno Valley, I'm excited to announce the creation of the Mayor's Basketball Cup," said Moreno Valley Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez. "Many cities have been waiting for this, but now it will be a reality." Interested players and coaches are encouraged to apply for a spot on "Team MoVal!" Coaching applications must be submitted by Aug. 19, and player applications must be submitted by Aug. 25. Proof of residency must be presented with the application. An open tryout and skills assessment will be held Aug. 27 at the Conference and Recreation Center, beginning at 9 a.m. There is no cost for residents to participate in the tryout or the tournament. Interested coaches and players must adhere to the following guidelines: participants must be current Moreno Valley residents or City employees, participants must be 18 years of age or older and participants cannot be active professional or college players.
