On Thursday, March 6, 2014, the Val Verde Unified School District (VVUSD) officially opened the Citrus Hill High School pool with a recent ribbon cutting ceremony held poolside. The ceremony at the "Bird Bath" was attended by many students, parents, community members, teachers, District Officials and the Board of Education.
Speakers included Superintendent Juan Lopez, Board President Michael Vargas, Principal Juan Cabral, Swim Coach Deanna Long and Athletic Director Richard Shearer. Sentiments regarding how valuable the pool will be to the high school's athletic program were echoed by all of the speakers. Additionally, the use of the pool by community members was also a highlight of the ceremony.
The ceremony ended with a countdown from 10, led by Assistant Superintendent of Education Services Michael McCormick, and a ribbon cutting by several students and Board Members. As the ribbon was cut, several swimmers dove into the pool and swam an inaugural first lap.
Immediately following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed cookies designed with various swimming themes. The highlight of the events following the ceremony was when a fully dressed Principal Juan Cabral was "escorted" into the pool.
Superintendent Lopez said, "Opening this pool is a milestone for the Citrus Hill family and the Mead Valley community. Having this aquatic facility will provide another opportunity for our students to excel in athletics and a resource for children in the community."
