There are 1,050 school districts in California, but just 26 were singled out recently for recognition of their outstanding support for and commitment to middle-grades student success by the California Middle Grades Alliance (CMGA); among them was Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD). At its annual luncheon at Sacramento, CMGA lauded MVUSD’s School Board and Superintendent for their work with students and educators to close the achievement gap, and their demonstrated commitment to provide students with equal access to high-quality learning opportunities. In 2014, CMGA chose Landmark Middle School as one of just 11 California Schools to Watch for its success in addressing the achievement gap. “Across the nation, middle school academic achievement remains a challenge,” explained School Board President Gary E. Baugh. “Students are so complex at that age, that it takes exceptional teachers and administrators to reach them and really engage them in learning and help keep them focused. We are just tremendously fortunate to have the exceptional staff who can do that.” CMGA is a collaborative partnership of 10 education organizations, including the California School Boards Association, California Department of Education, California Teachers Association, California State Parent Teacher Association, Association of California School Administrators, California League of Middle Schools, California Middle Grades Partnership Network, California Schools to Watch – Taking Center Stage, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and Gaining Early Awareness, Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP).
