Voice of the People: Happy Summer

By Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez, District 4 Councilmember, City of Moreno Valley
July 16, 2014 at 08:24am. Views: 120

Happy summer! The following is a report of some of the latest happenings in District 4. As mentioned before, the Emerging Leaders Council (ELC) was created in April as a mechanism for our young adults to have a voice in local government, our city. The ELC held its first meeting on June 23, 2014 and five outstanding members were sworn in! At this inaugural meeting, the ELC selected their roles, and I can tell you that we have some very motivated young people in Moreno Valley! Those that have been selected include: Kimberly Billingsley Scott, student mayor; Wendy Acuna, member; Luis Mojica, member; Steven A. Sandoval, clerk; Daniel Villa, student vice mayor. The ELC is something very important to the future of our City. Success planning in leadership is key to a successful future. I look forward to recommending additional ELC appointments to the City Council very soon. In addition to the ELC’s first meeting, the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter was selected to join 49 other Animal Shelters nationwide to participate in the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. The $100k Challenge is a contest in which 50 shelters across the country compete to break their own records at saving animals' lives. Throughout the months of June, July and August, with your help, the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter will work hard to save more dogs and cats than they did in 2013. Reducing the number of euthanized animals is a priority for this Council.
