The Moreno Valley community can rest just a little bit easier now that 12 members of the Canyon Springs Health Careers Academy have completed a weekend of Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. The national CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may affect their community, and trains them in basic disaster - response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.
Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can help others in their neighborhood, school or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
One of the days’ training included a simulation with a smoke-filled building, victims screaming and clawing at them, and people trying to get back into the building. Students had to put their skills to work as they triaged the victims and pulled victims out of the building.
