Students and teachers from Victoriano Elementary School recently returned from the Riverside County Education Summit where the school was honored as a “2014 Model of Academic Excellence and Innovation.” The Education Summit featured a workshop led by students in grades 2-5 titled, “Hands-On STEM – Building 21st Century Literacy in the Elementary Grades.” Victoriano has been recognized for providing educational programs that engage students in hands-on learning while accelerating literacy and multi-media skills. Teacher and workshop presenter Doug Woods shared, “It’s exciting to see the potential of our students. We watched them present at California’s STEM Symposium last month and knew they were ready to represent our school. As an educator, I strongly believe that every child needs authentic opportunities to help them grow and decide what their contributions to society will be. These challenging and meaningful experiences drive our students’ confidence and ultimately changes them for the better.” Victoriano Elementary continues to seek out new ways to foster innovative learning as they move into year three of a comprehensive STEM program. Teachers and students will once again offer an annual community STEM Fair on Thursday, Dec. 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. During this open house event, Victoriano students from each grade level will provide hands on demonstrations of the performance expectations within the Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, fourth and fifth grade student teams will highlight relevant digital applications at the Technology Showcase and engage STEM Fair participants in the possibilities of robotics in the elementary grades. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun and learning. Whether you are a student, parent, or educator, you won’t want to miss it! A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.

Photo Caption: Crime in San Bernardino has dropped by 30 percent or more throughout the city. One reason is that there are more officers on the streets. The Police Department’s goal is to have 350 sworn officers. Current full-time staffing is reported at 295 sworn officers and 156 professional staff.
