Riverside’s two NCAA Division I universities are bringing their friendly rivalry to a larger stage with the launch of the Crosstown Showdown, a new yearlong athletic competition between California Baptist University and the University of California, Riverside.
Throughout the 2026–27 academic year, the CBU Lancers and UCR Highlanders will compete in 14 matchups across several men’s and women’s sports. The series will include soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and other athletic contests, giving local fans numerous opportunities to support Riverside’s student-athletes.
The Crosstown Showdown will officially begin Saturday, September 26, when the universities’ women’s soccer teams meet at UCR. The opening game will set the tone for a competition expected to bring students, alumni, families and community members together throughout the year.
Although the two universities have faced each other in individual sporting events before, the Crosstown Showdown creates a broader identity for the rivalry. By connecting the games under one banner, the schools are establishing a tradition that celebrates athletic excellence, school pride and Riverside’s growing presence in collegiate sports.
The series also offers an opportunity to introduce more residents to the city’s university athletic programs. Fans who usually attend basketball or baseball games may be encouraged to experience other sports, while young athletes can watch Division I competition close to home.
Located only a few miles apart, CBU and UCR are two of Riverside’s most recognizable institutions. Each university has its own history, campus culture and devoted fan base, but both contribute to the educational, economic and civic life of the community. The new rivalry gives them another way to strengthen their connection with the city while showcasing the talent and dedication of their student-athletes.
For the athletes, each matchup will carry added local significance. Players will not only compete for a regular-season victory but also for bragging rights against a nearby opponent whose students and supporters they may encounter throughout the community.
The competition is expected to create an energetic atmosphere at both campuses as the Lancers and Highlanders alternate hosting events during the academic year. Riverside residents will be able to follow the series as it moves from fall sports into winter and spring competition.
As the Crosstown Showdown develops, it has the potential to become an anticipated Riverside tradition—one that brings together spirited competition, community pride and support for local college athletics.
The first Crosstown Showdown event will feature women’s soccer on Saturday, September 26, at the University of California, Riverside. Additional matchups will continue throughout the 2026–27 academic year.
