MORENO VALLEY>> Five theater students from Valley View High School are moving on to the semi-finals of the prestigious August Wilson Monologue Competition in Los Angeles.
The students were selected from an original 133 Southern California students at the first audition last month, in which 24 VVHS students auditioned. The five VVHS students who made the cut now join 45 others for the semi-final round of competition. From there, 12 will be selected to perform on the world-famous Mark Taper Forum stage in Los Angeles.
"Congratulations to the whole VVHS troupe and teacher Jeanine Lopez," said Tim McGillivray, public information officer for Moreno Valley Unified School District.
According to the Center Theatre Group's website, the August Wilson Monologue Competition enables students from all walks of life to discover August Wilson's works of art, study the craft of acting, explore their own creative voices and learn more about the shared history and themselves.
Center Theatre Group has been the Los Angeles home for the National August Wilson Monologue Competition since 2011. The August Wilson Monologue Competition is an educational journey that includes workshops with teaching artists where students hone their acting and storytelling skills, auditions where theatre professionals offer feedback to all participants and an introduction to August Wilson and The American Century Cycle.
