Celebrating César Chávez Day

Monday, March 31 marks César Chávez Day, a time to reflect on the extraordinary legacy of a man who dedicated his life to justice, equality, and the dignity of all workers.

Born into a farming family, Chávez knew firsthand the struggles of migrant laborers and devoted his life to improving their conditions. Through nonviolent protests, strikes, and boycotts, he co-founded the United Farm Workers union and fought tirelessly for fair wages, better working conditions, and labor rights that continue to protect workers today.

César Chávez believed in service to others, in the idea that real change happens when communities come together with a shared purpose. Here in Moreno Valley, we see that same spirit in the dedication and work ethic of our residents, from educators shaping young minds to healthcare workers caring for families, and every hardworking individual making our city thrive.

His words, "Sí se puede"—Yes, it can be done, continue to inspire us. They remind us that progress is possible when we commit to fairness, kindness, and lifting each other up. Whether through volunteering, supporting local businesses, or simply treating one another with respect, we all have a role to play in building a stronger community.

As we recognize César Chávez Day, let’s take a moment to honor his contributions and reflect on how we can continue his mission in our own way. Let’s choose compassion. Let’s stand up for those in need, and let’s never underestimate the impact of our collective voices.

Moreno Valley is built on hard work, resilience, and unity—values that Chávez championed throughout his life. Today, I invite you to celebrate his legacy by embracing those ideals and making a difference in our community. Start today for a better tomorrow.

Sí se puede, Moreno Valley!

The Police Department’s goal is to have 350 sworn officers. Current full-time staffing is reported at 295 sworn officers and 156 professional staff.
