Celebrating Juneteenth

Tomorrow, June 19, we celebrate Juneteenth as a community, as a city, and as a nation. This holiday recounts the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved people in the state were finally freed by executive decree.

 

In 2021, President Joe Biden officially declared Juneteenth a national holiday, and our country now acknowledges and celebrates Juneteenth as an integral part of American history. 

 

Juneteenth has been celebrated in the African-American community for generations with events, cookouts, and quality time with friends and family.

  

This past weekend, on June 15, we celebrated the holiday as a community here in Moreno Valley with our very own Juneteenth Festival.

 

The day was filled with amazing performances by Aurora Monroe School of Dance, New Foundation Church, NLAA Dare Dance Company, and a two-hour concert by The Groove Squad! There was also a domino tournament and a kids' electric car racetrack hosted by Kids Car Club LA.

 

It truly was a family-friendly celebration of freedom, culture, and community.

This Juneteenth, as we reflect on the resilience and courage of those who have fought for freedom and equality, let’s celebrate the progress we have made while also acknowledging the work that still needs to be done to achieve racial equality and justice for all.

 

 

 

Mañana, 19 de junio, celebramos Juneteenth como comunidad, como ciudad y como nación. Esta festividad recuerda el día en 1865 cuando las tropas de la Unión llegaron a la bahía de Galveston, Texas, y anunciaron que más de 250,000 personas esclavizadas en el estado fueron finalmente liberadas por decreto ejecutivo.

 

En 2021, el presidente Joe Biden declaró oficialmente Juneteenth como feriado nacional, y nuestro país ahora reconoce y celebra Juneteenth como parte integral de la historia estadounidense.

 

Juneteenth se ha celebrado en la comunidad afroamericana durante generaciones con eventos, comidas al aire libre y tiempo de calidad con amigos y familiares.

 

El fin de semana pasado, dia 15 de junio, celebramos la festividad como comunidad aquí en Moreno Valley con nuestro propio Festival de Juneteenth.

 

El día estuvo lleno de increíbles actuaciones de la Escuela de Danza Aurora Monroe, la Iglesia New Foundation, la Compañía de Danza NLAA Dare y un concierto de dos horas de The Groove Squad. También hubo un torneo de dominó y una pista de carreras de autos eléctricos para niños organizada por Kids Car Club LA.

 

Realmente fue una celebración familiar de la libertad, la cultura y la comunidad.

Este Juneteenth, mientras reflexionamos sobre la resiliencia y el coraje de aquellos que han luchado por la libertad y la igualdad, celebremos el progreso que hemos logrado y, al mismo tiempo, reconozcamos el trabajo que aún queda por hacer para lograr la igualdad racial y la justicia para todos.
