After living through a pandemic for over a year and in honor of this Mother’s Day, City News Group wanted to show appreciation and thank all of the extraordinary moms that live in our community. We wanted to thank all the amazing moms that, even through a pandemic, found a way to go above and beyond for their family. So, we asked our readers, who they believe deserves to be called, ‘Mother of the Year.’ We would like to thank everyone who participated and placed their nominations, we loved reading your stories and you are definitely appreciated within your community. City News Group cannot wait to do this again next year. But now, this year’s winner.

City News Group would like to congratulate Michele Guthrie who is the 2021 Mother of the Year!

Michele Guthrie was nominated by her practicing physician teacher, Sarah Kim, who helps train Guthrie in the medical field.

Guthrie reentered into the workforce after 11 years of being a homemaker to her three children ages 12, 10, and seven during one of the most unprecedented times in history.

“She began training as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at ARMC during the height of the pandemic in Dec 2020” Kim said.

In addition to working as a registered nurse during a time with a surge in COVID-19 cases, Kim mentioned that Guthrie also pursuing her Master's in Nursing degree while training, in addition to helping her kids continue with their online schooling.

“She is very attentive to her children's needs, making every attempt to attend her children's sporting events and planning birthday parties for each of her kids,” Kim said.

As Guthrie’s teacher and trainer, Kim not only sees Guthrie’s work schedule but gets to know her personally and the life she had before working as a registered nurse.

“Her schedule is one that makes any normal person exhausted just hearing about it. Not to mention she and her husband both served in the Army.”

Part of the criteria of nominating someone for Mother of the Year is letting us know how the nominee works toward making a better community and why they think they deserve special recognition. Kim described her appreciation and awe for Guthrie’s overall work and character through one of the most difficult years in history.

“Michele continues to serve in the public sphere as an RN,” Kim said. “She is nearly done with training and I thought she deserved to be recognized for staying strong with a positive spirit through the worst of times this past year. Super mom, super human!”

Congratulations to Michele, you are cherished and appreciated and deserve to be crowned, Mother of the Year. Happy Mother’s Day!

Our mothers hold a special place in all of our hearts. The most playful joy we still hold in our hearts and the sweet memories of a tender moment experienced with our moms can still be vividly played over and over in our heads as if it happened yesterday. A mother’s love can be felt unconditionally at the highest and lowest moments of our lives. No matter what moment or where we’re at in life, deep inside, we can sense that mom is standing right beside us, gently holding our hands-saying, ‘everything will be okay.’ For that and all the amazing things that you do for us, we would like to wish every mom a Happy Mother’s Day.

City News Group would like to congratulate Cynthia Betancourt who is the Moreno Valley City News Group's 2021 Amazing Mom!

Cynthia Betancourt was nominated by her daughter for City News Group's 2021 Amazing Mom because she wanted to thank her for all the work and dedication, she shows her entire family.

“She is so awesome and does so much for her whole family,” Betancourt’s daughter said.

As part of the nomination criteria, we wanted to know what the nominee does that goes above and beyond for their family and Betancourt’s daughter described how her mom always puts her family first and makes sure everyone is taken care of.

“She helps my grandparents and my family and takes care of two families and two houses and helps with school as much as she can. She buys stuff for her parents instead of herself.”

Betancourt is a caretaker for both of her parents. She also takes the time to help with distance learning for her 16-year-old daughter and 11-year old granddaughter. According to her daughter, Betancourt never hesitates when it comes to helping others, "She is quick on her feet, plans things so that everyone gets the help they need, and she makes the best enchiladas!"

Congratulations to Cynthia, you are loved and appreciated by your daughter and whole family, Happy Mother’s Day!
