Creating a lively, resilient garden in Inland Empire’s inland climate is absolutely within reach with the right selection of perennials, your landscape can shine even under our hot sun.

1. Southern California Heat-Loving Perennials

Leafy, robust, and season-long bloomers like Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus) bring elegant, trumpet-shaped clusters in late summer. These deer-resistant, container friendly perennials flourish even under Inland Empire’s warmer zones?7–10.

African Iris (Dietes bicolor) is another standout, it forms grass-like evergreen foliage and blooms through spring into summer. Perfect for walkways and sunlit borders, it tolerates full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.

For a fairy dust effect, Sea Lavender (Statice, Limonium latifolium) offers airy clusters of purple and white flowers that dry beautifully and stand up to drought and deer.

2. Native Gems for Color and Conservation

California Fuchsia (Epilobium species) bursts with rich red or orange blooms that are hummingbird magnets and endure in sun-drenched, dry slopes, ideal for our region.

Hummingbird Sage (Salvia spathacea) offers fragrant, rose-lilac flower spikes from March through May. It thrives in partial to full sun, spreads beautifully via rhizomes, and attracts hummingbirds, all while being low maintenance.

Encelia californica (California brittlebush) is a striking daisy-like bloomer with bright yellow petals, favored by pollinators and tolerant of tough Inland Empire heat, thriving in full sun and well-draining soil.

3. Water-Wise, Inland Empire Favorites

From the Waterwise Garden Planner, several striking yet low-water perennials are perfect for our region's unique climate:

• Desert Mallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua) blooms apricot flowers, loves full sun, and remains compact at 3–4 feet tall, a native with robust drought tolerance.

• Firecracker Penstemon (Penstemon eatonii) dazzles with tubular flowers, grows well in sun, and needs minimal water.

• Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) yields clusters of leaf-held blooms in all-day sun or partial shade.

4. Versatile, Full-Sun Beauties with Pollinator Appeal

Gardening pros highlight the best full-sun perennials for pollinators and long-lasting color. Favorites include Black eyed Susan and Blanket Flower, both hardy and drought tolerant; Bee Balm in radiant red tones; Lantana and Honeysuckle, which draw hummingbirds; Sedum for succulent texture and season-long appeal.

Expert Encouragement

Let your garden be a source of joy and a beacon of color and resilience. Pair natives like California Fuchsia and Desert Mallow with resilient perennials like Agapanthus and Black eyed Susan for a landscape that's both beautiful and ecologically vibrant.

Design with seasonality in mind: plant Hummingbird Sage and California Fuchsia for early to mid-season peaks, then count on Agapanthus and Black eyed Susan to carry the summer through fall. Add Sea Lavender for a delicate texture and dried arrangements.

Most importantly, use mulch, deep but infrequent watering, and well-drained soil to help new plantings establish strong, drought-resilient roots.

Your Inland Empire garden can be a testament to beauty, sustainability, and seasonal celebration thriving under the California sun with color and poise.
