MORENO VALLEY>> On Wednesday, March 29, Mayor Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez attended the National Policy Institute on Energy, Natural Resources and Climate Change, along with dozens of other Latino elected officials as part of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund. Gutierrez and other policymakers discussed various policy approaches for the reliable and affordable development and use of energy while addressing the responsible stewardship of natural resources and the future vitality of the Moreno Valley communities. "Ensuring an understanding of energy, natural resources and climate change is crucial to the future sustainability of our city,” Gutierrez said. The Policy Institute brought state legislators and local policymakers together with leading national and state experts, private sector representatives and other key stakeholders for two days of professional development in Houston, Texas. During the training, Gutierrez and other officials expanded their understanding of the country’s most pressing energy, natural resource and climate change issues and exchanged legislative ideas and best practices with colleagues from across the country. The City of Moreno Valley adopted its Energy Efficiency and Climate Action Strategy in 2012, to reduce the environmental and fiscal impact of energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions in City facilities and within the community. The city’s plan includes strategies to reduce the city’s electricity and water consumption while increasing recycling and diversion efforts, many of which have already been implemented.
