Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, a group of Moreno Valley Unified School District educators, and Executive Director of the Moreno Valley Educators Association, Salina Joiner, are currently attending the Footsteps to Freedom tour in the Midwest. The tour follows the historic Underground Railroad where slaves escaped to freedom.

The group of teachers, administrators, parents, district office staff and classified staff is on the first of several tours this summer. The tours give participants first-hand experience about the courage of the people who sought freedom or who helped others achieve it along the route of the Underground Railroad from Kentucky to Canada.

“I have attended this trip and must say it was a fantastic experience for me and I know it will be for the group attending this year,” said Board Clerk Cleveland Johnson

“This is a unique opportunity to learn and grow from our country’s history. I know our teachers will be able to use this experience in the classroom for a more in-depth educational experience for our students, and it will help build our cultural proficiency,” said Superintendent Dr. Kedziora.

Highlights from the four tours included visits to Wilberforce University; the National Underground Railroad Museum in Maysville, Kentucky; the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; Uncle Tom’s Cabin in Ontario, Canada; and Harriet Tubman’s home in Auburn, New York.
