Great ShakeOut Readies Students, Staff for Big Quake

MORENO VALLEY>> Moreno Valley schools are just 30 miles from the San Andreas fault, which averages a massive earthquake about every 150 years, the last being the devastating San Francisco quake of 1906 – 110 years ago. In other words, The Big One – or at least a big one – could hit at any moment, so it is crucial that students and staff “be aware and prepare.” Many students and staff took the Great California ShakeOut seriously and went through the entire process from seeking immediate protective shelter – Drop, Cover and Hold On – to evacuating to a play field, checking every classroom for stragglers or the injured and taking careful roll to make sure everyone is accounted for. "The one missing piece might be parent education," said Tim McGillivray, Public Information Officer for the Moreno Valley Unified School District. "In the event the quake is large enough to warrant student dismissal, parents should be aware that, especially at the elementary level, students will only be released to an adult listed on your blue emergency card who provides ID. We will not release a student to someone whose identity and authority cannot be verified."
