Juneteenth

On June 19, we come together as a community, a city, and a nation to celebrate Juneteenth. A powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the ongoing pursuit of freedom.

Juneteenth commemorates the solemn day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, bringing word that more than 250,000 enslaved people were finally free - nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. It stands as a profound moment in American history, and today, we honor it as a national holiday.

For generations, Juneteenth has been celebrated with family gatherings, cookouts, music, and moments of reflection within the African-American community. These traditions continue to bring families and friends together in the spirit of freedom and unity.

This year, Moreno Valley is proud to host our annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Civic Center Amphitheater. Join us for an afternoon filled with live entertainment, children’s activities, delicious food, and a vibrant showcase of local artists and vendors. It’s a wonderful opportunity to honor history, celebrate culture, and come together as one community.

As we honor Juneteenth this year, let’s remember the journey of those in our community, our country, and around the world who fought - and continue to fight - for freedom and equality. Let’s celebrate the progress we have made and also renew our commitment to building a future where liberty and justice truly belong to everyone.

Happy Juneteenth, Moreno Valley.
